Usually, yes, with more care in where the panels go. The Town of Southold's Historic Preservation Commission adopted a solar panel policy in 2023 based on the Secretary of the Interior's Standards. It asks that panels on a historic building be minimally visible from the public right of way, mounted low and parallel to the roof, and installed so they can be removed without damaging historic material. It also asks owners to look first at other locations, such as a newer addition, an outbuilding, or a screened spot on the grounds.
